What to Wear For Your Pregnancy Photography Session

What should I wear to my maternity photography session? How many changes should I bring? These are the most common questions from our Sydney pregnancy clients. Here are some things for you to consider.

Natural Pregnancy Photography

We prefer a more natural style of photography, that celebrates who you are, and your connection with your partner and child. This means we want you to be dressed in styles that you would normally wear, that feel like the real you.

Each of our pregnancy clients brings in clothes they own and are comfortable in. This means when you look back at these photographs in 5 years, you will see it is all you, genuine and authentic. Each of your maternity photos will be unique, completely different from anyone else’s.

We have some wraps that you can also use, for the more intimate parts of the session. Discuss your ideas with us.

Formal Maternity Clothing Styles

Start with dressing up a little to celebrate this occasion. After all, it’s both the last time you will be just a couple, and also your first family portrait of three.

We’ve found that a neat shirt and pants always looks good on dad. You don’t need a tie – it’s not work – but a 3/4 or long sleeve pressed shirt looks clean and classic.

For mum, it’s important to be comfortable. We like stretchy dresses that hug the tummy, so that you can see the round shape underneath. Be aware of the material, as some thicker dresses do not follow the curve of the belly, and gives little bumps as it goes around.

You can be as dressy or as simple as you like – each couple is different.

Casual Pregnancy Photographs

Next we change into something more casual. It could mean a sweater, jeans, or anything that may have special meaning to you.

The focus is on your expression and bond with each other. What you’ll see in 10 years is how you felt after he made that promise, or after she told you how much you meant to her.

You can also show off little baby things, ultrasounds, knits made by grandma, or other sentimental items at this stage.

Showing The Belly in Pregnancy Photos

The belly is the star of the show after all! A good set of maternity lingerie is important, as your body has changed and your old lingerie may cause bulges and leave marks on the skin.

You can also wear tube tops, an unbuttoned shirt, stretchy pants, or even use our materials to cover the bottom half. You may also choose to take some nude boudoir maternity photographs to capture the beauty of this time.

Rental Gowns

Of course there is also the option to rent or buy maternity gowns that are especially made for photo shoots. This is a great way to get something you’d really love to wear, and have something truly unique about your session.

Conclusion

There are lots of ideas above, but remember these are a dozen different maternity sessions. You really just need one good set of clothing for each part. Our pregnancy photography guide will have more info, and we will discuss with you when we plan your pregnancy session together.
